Hillary Calls for a World Response

Hillary Calls for a World ResponseSecretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for a world response to the North Korean sinking of the Cheonan. A concentrated world reaction may be the only way to prevent war on the Korean Peninsula. It would effectively take South Korea out of the equation thus lessening the chance of a North Korean attack. With South Korea moved to the back burner North Korea will have much less of an excuse to try to start a war. World pressure would almost certainly be too much for North Korea to bear for very long. I believe that as long as we stay with that strategy the situation will eventually be diffused.

The big question in this situation is what will China do? China has veto power in the United Nations and is the strongest ally that the North Koreans have. Their response so far has been measured and cool. If they remain noncommital they can certainly have an adverse effect on any sanctions that the UN would attempt to impose. Their action or lack of it probably would not derail economic sanctions but would certainly put a damper on them.

The North Korean government maintains that the whole thing is a farce created by the US. The US has given the South Korean government their full support during this crisis.

Even though I am sure that our military ring customers stationed in South Korea are on full alert, there have been no discernable prepatory actions by the North Korean military on their side of the border.
