Al-Qaeda Appoints a New Afghan Commander No doubt Osama bin Laden was the al-Qaeda who has appointed a new head in Afghanistan. The last commander of this vast area was killed last month in an attack by a US Predator.
Shezk Fateh al Masri is the new head of al-Qaeda in Eastern Afghanistan. This territory touches on several other countries to include parts of Iran, and Pakistan. He is replacing Mustafa Abu Yarid so now he gets the opportunity to be a high priority target.
Al- Masri is a capable commander who has proven his ability in several operations that we know about and I am sure that there are many more. Mr al-Masri is actually an Egyptian who wasn’t a formal member of al-Qaeda.
Mr Yalid who he replaces was very successful at embedding al-Qaeda fighters with Taliban in an action which is similar to the way that we use our Special Forces ring customers as force multipliers. He also had a very good relationship with Taliban leaders in the area that he had control of. Al-Masri was probably picked because of some of his personality characteristics which will enable him to get along with the same personnel.
Al-Qaeda leaders in the region have notoriously short life spans, and it seems that our intelligence is already on to him. I’m sure that he is taking every possible precaution against predator attacks.
