http://mrnashia.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/group-dynamics-or-what-role-do-you-play/ Group Dynamics or What Role Do You Play?

The team or small group is composed of different individuals who each play a different role in the function of the group. Dynamics will change with the situation and each person will not necessarily display all of their personality characteristics in each situation. The beauty of group dynamics is that they will change in order to fit the situation with the occasion.

This conglomeration of talents and personalities will contain all of the elements necessary to the survival of the group. The group will take on its own identity and the members will relate with the group in a unified voice. There will always be one person who will be the de facto leader of the group and each of the group members will have certain skills and talents which will benefit the survival of the group.

Each person will have an occasion at one time or another to use their talents for group survival.

If you are a leader, manager, or supervisor you need to be intimately familiar with the talents and capabilities of each individual of your team or group. You will need to be familiar with their talents in order to utilize them correctly. A wise leader will always think two or three moves ahead. You should be intimately familiar with all of the nuances and ramifications of each individual situation in order to assign responsibility correctly.
Know how you can use the talents and assets of the group members to enhance the operation of the group.

Each member will habitually take on a certain role because of the makeup of their personality. You should recognize the different roles and know that this each individual will be the most comfortable in the role that he or she is used to functioning in. Some of the roles are:

IMPLEMENTOR; this is the person who is the active organizer, and is very task oriented. This person will move the group to a desired destination. This person will tackle the new task head on and get results for you.

THE SHAPER; is the person who wants to get it done. This group member may be impatient. You will need to keep an eye on this one because their impatience may have a negative impact on the dynamics of the group. You will need the push that he or she provides but you need to keep a handle on them.

THE WORRIER; is a must have for the group because he or she will insure that the details are taken care of. This is the person whom you will normally want to assign the small details to because he or she will worry about every little thing and check and recheck to see if it is done. It is better to let this person work alone because their worrying will drive the rest of the group crazy.

THE COORDINATOR; is the person who will do more to facilitate harmony within the group. If you are smart you will allow this person to do what he or she does best. This person is people oriented and hates conflict. Each group needs such a person to help keep it on an even keel.

THE RESOURCE INVESTIGATOR; this person will follow new ideas and will be the creative one in the group. Allow this person to be him or her self because you will benefit from their ideas. Don’t burden this person with details because they don’t handle them very well.

THE MONITOR OR EVALUATOR; is a good supervisor and will keep your quality control up to snuff. You need to be careful here also because this person’s obsession with perfection will definitely generate some ill will within the group.

THE EXPERT OR TECHNICIAN; will be your technical expert and will know how to
Make the object or things in their area of expertise work. This person as all of the others are a must have for the group and will cause the dynamic of the group to work.

Remember that all of the people in the group will display one or even more of these traits to a certain degree. It is up to you to recognize how, when, and where to best utilize them. Riceland Enterprises
