President Karzai has Denied Meeting with Haqqani Fighters

President Karzai has Denied Meeting with Haqqani Fighters President HAmid Karzai has denied being in contact with the Haqqani Network of Taliban fighters. The Haqqani network is probably the most powerful network of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan and it is rumored that they are being helped by Pakistani Intelligence (ISI) and some of the higher ranking officials in the Pakastani givernment.

President Karzai is denying the meeting because a story posted by Al Jazeera claimed that it had occurred. Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if it has taken place. As a matter of fact I think that such a meeting would be a good thing because it shows that both sides are serious about coming to peace terms.

If he has in fact met with them now is not a good time to publicize that they were seeking to come to terms for peace. If they have met I certainly hope that it proved to be productive. It was reported that he spent his time with Sirajuddia Haqqani who is the leader of this network.

The Haqqani network is nothing to be trifled with. They raise money through a variety of illegal activities and have their own training camps throughout the region. They are well entrenched and the ties are old and well established. It would be better to come to some sort of peace agreement with them to reduce the bloodshed of our Operation Enduring Freedom ring customers, NATO, and Taliban personnel.
