A Little More Insight on the Cheonan Incident I have discovered something interesting as I was doing some reading about the Cheonan and based on the new information I can draw some other conclusions. Now keep in mind that these conclusions don’t necessarily represent what happened and are only based on my past personal experience.
When I was stationed in South Korea with the US Army we used to conduct an annual training exercise with the South Korean Army called “Team Spirit.” Each year the North Korean military would assume a provocative posture and would actually do things to push the evvelope. Now with that being said let me add this to the pot. At the time of the Cheonan sinking our United States Navy ring customers were conducting a joint antisubmarine training exercise with the South Korean navy. Do you see the parallel here?
The Choenan was sank well away from the area where the exercise was conducted. The reason for this is that our military makes sure that all joint exercises are done well away from the border territory so as to minimalize the chances of a conflict. This obviously didn’t work in the Cheonan incident. Now the attack may have been caused by someones error but I seriously doubt that. I am sure that the North Koreans have a zillion redundant safeguards built in just to prevent accidents like this one. I believe that it was a deliberate attack conducted to retaliate for a previous incident.
