Gates has Added Rules to Tighten up on Interview Procedures The latest move of our Secretary of Defense has been to limit military officials in their interviews with the media. From now on they will have to have pentagon clearance for interviews with media contacts. This move may seem a little extreme, and my opinion is that it very well may be. I do understand its purpose however and I hope that it accomplishes what it is supposed to do.
Although they say that there are other reasons for this new rule, I believe that the latest incident which showed a rift between General McChrystal and the Obama administration was the straw which broke the camel’s back. This incident was not good because it showed the world that there was some disharmony among our top leaders. If we are to win this war we have to present a unified front. Anything else is bad for the morale of our troops and citizens and just can’t be tolerated.
Due to the nature of military operations there is not always much which can be revealed before hand because any leaked intelligence may endanger the lives of our custom military ring customers.
One thing that is often misunderstood is that people think that there may be a dislike for the press by the military. This is not so. The job of the press is to report the news and that is what they intend on doing, but publicity is not always good for military operations.
