Taliban Fighters Attack the Afghan Peace Conference

Taliban Fighters Attack the Afghan Peace ConferencePresident Hamid Karzai is trying hard to win peace in Afghanistan and the Taliban are doing everything in their power to derail his plan before he can get it off of the ground. Taliban fighters attacked the area where he was conducting his peace conference yesterday but were not able to cause any casualties. There are several reports of the action which conflict slightly but it seems that three or four suicide attackers were responsible for the attack. According to reports three of them were killed and the fourth was captured.

President karzai was hoping to have some Talian leaders represented at the conference. His plan was to make overtures to them and offer them some say so in the new Afghan government. It seems that the attack was their way of saying no thanks. Even though he was not able to get Taliban leaders to his conference he did have some high level sympathizers to attend.

The attack didn’t get close enough to do any real damage but I guess it made the intended statement. President Karzai did remind the leaders in attendance that the fighting in Afghanistan is counterproductive to what they want to accomplish which is to get the United States out of the country. He had an excellent point on that one. I’ll bet that many of our military ring customers serving there currently would love to tell the Taliban the same thing.
